EPA Tasmania keeps watchful eye over Victorian landfill situation

22 September 2008
The Director of the Tasmanian Environment Protection Authority Warren Jones says the EPA is closely monitoring the Cranbourne landfill situation in Victoria. Landfill gas produced from the closed landfill at Cranbourne is affecting a neighbouring residential estate. The Victorian EPA and the local council are working with experts to develop options for controlling the spread of landfill gas from the former landfill. Mr Jones said while there have been no reports of landfill gas migrating into Tasmanian homes; the EPA in Tasmania is reviewing what has happened at Cranbourne and will use this information and experience to screen Tasmanian landfills. "The EPA here in Tasmania is developing a methodology to help local councils assess the risks associated with closed landfills," Mr Jones said.
