Awards an opportunity to showcase sustainability in action

03 February 2010

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is urging industry, government and community sectors to promote their commitments to green innovation by entering this year’s Tasmanian Awards for Environmental Excellence.

EPA Chair John Ramsay said Tasmania is committed to reducing waste, using energy more efficiently and conserving resources, and the annual awards provide a perfect opportunity to showcase the latest advances in integrating sustainable practices.

“As well as celebrating these outstanding contributions, the Tasmanian Awards for Environmental Excellence highlight projects that foster leadership and encourage others to adopt measures to protect our air, water, soil and ecosystems,” Mr Ramsay said.

“The EPA is proud to be hosting the Awards. Our vision is for a Tasmania that is clean, healthy and sustainable and the awards recognise industry, community and government projects that help enhance, preserve and protect the environment.

“The Awards are now in their 12th year and are held in very high regard for continually highlighting innovative practices, processes and products from all sectors.”

Mr Ramsay said the 2010 Awards are open to individuals and organisations in the private, public and community arenas.

“The seven categories embrace a wide field of endeavour and, as well as welcoming nominations from previous entrants, submissions are particularly encouraged from individuals and industry, education, local government and community groups that have not considered entering the Awards in the past,” he said.

The categories for the 2010 Awards are: Large Business Sustainability, Small Business Sustainability, Environment Stewardship, Education, Local Government, Community and Leadership in Climate Change Action.

Category winners will be nominated for the national Banksia Awards and one will receive the Minister’s Choice Award.

The announcement of award winners will coincide with World Environment Day celebrations in June 2010.

The Tasmanian Awards for Environmental Excellence are free to enter. Nominations close on 31 March 2010.

Entry kits and more information about the awards are available on this website's home page.
