EPA Board considers Lion cheese expansion proposal

31 August 2012

A proposal to expand the Lion cheese factory in Burnie has been considered by the EPA Board.

EPA Board Chair John Ramsay says Lion Dairy and Drinks has applied to expand cheese production by redeveloping and extending the factory located on Old Surrey Road.

“The proponent lodged a Development Application with a supporting Development Proposal and Environmental Management Plan (DPEMP) with the Burnie City Council,” Mr Ramsay said.

“The application was referred to the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (the Board) for assessment under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA). The application was advertised for public comment in May this year.”

“In its deliberations, the Board noted wastewater, noise and atmospheric emission issues associated with the expansion and therefore decided to impose appropriate conditions of operation on the proposed activity.”

The Board’s environmental assessment report, including environmental protection conditions to be included in the permit if Burnie City Council grants one, has been forwarded to the Council. The Council will review the planning considerations before deciding whether to grant a permit.
