Controlled Waste Tracking System

A proposed system to monitor and report on the movement of controlled wastes from the producers (consignors) to approved treatment, resource recovery or disposal facilities.

A Controlled Waste Tracking System (CWTS) will soon be introduced in Tasmania by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA). All controlled waste handlers will be required to participate in the CWTS and purchase tracking certificates to accompany consignments of controlled waste.

The CWTS will provide monitoring and reporting on the movement of controlled waste from producers (or consignors) to approved treatment, resource recovery or disposal facilities. Reliable information on the sources, size and nature of controlled waste movements helps prioritise which waste types require improved management and to develop policies and strategies. The provision of a uniform and enforceable system (the CWTS) will also ensure greater producer responsibility and improve procedures across all the parties in the chain of custody.
