The EPA is instrumental in collating information on wastewater treatment plants that it regulates under environmental permits and the provisions of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act. This information is available in the Tasmanian Water and Sewerage State of the Industry Report (the Report) which also includes information from economic and health regulators and water and sewerage services providers.
The Report is released on an annual basis by the Office of the Tasmanian Economic Regulator (OTTER) and covers performance during the previous financial year. The inaugural (2007-08) State of the Industry Report was released in April 2009, following the introduction of legislation to reform Tasmania’s water and sewerage industry.
The Report covers a broad range of issues including affordability, customer service, network reliability and efficiency, compliance of the industry with public health and environmental guidelines and identification of future projects.
Performance indicators used in the Report are consistent with the National Performance Framework which applies to Australian water and sewerage utilities above a specified size threshold. The continued collation of performance data and annual release of reports will allow an assessment of longer term compliance trends, facilitate comparison with mainland entities of a similar size and provide for public accountability.
