The 3 Rs: Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

There are many benefits from re-using and recycling waste materials where we can and reducing what we use and throw away.  These include, but are not limited to the following:

  • reducing our reliance on natural resources;
  • capturing the embodied energy in the things we have originally purchased;
  • reducing landfill required to dispose of these materials; and
  • saving money - with a little creative thinking, a waste material can be re-used, saving you from buying something new!

The EPA is working with individuals, schools, the community, government, businesses and industry to reduce the production of waste in Tasmania. Where waste disposal cannot be avoided, sustainable waste management standards and practices are imposed by the EPA to reduce the environmental impact.

  1. Managing Waste in the Home

    How to manage wastes in the domestic setting.
  2. Managing Industrial Waste

    Managing waste from commercial and industrial sources can dramatically reduce the waste going to landfill.
  3. Australian Packaging Covenant Tasmanian Action Plan

    The Tasmanian Government has developed an Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) Action Plan, July 2010 to June 2015, in accordance with the APC obligations for signatories.
  4. Product Stewardship

    The EPA pursues product stewardship, whereby manufacturers, importers, governments and consumers share the responsibility for the environmental impacts of a product throughout its full life cycle, including production, handling, use and disposal.
  5. Recycling Directory

    Waste generation and disposal is one of the most serious environmental problems in the industrialised world. Waste generators - that is, every one of us - can use this Waste Recovery and Recycling Directory whether we are in a commercial, industrial, government or domestic setting.
  6. Resources - Waste Recovery

    There are endless ways of reducing, reusing and recycling materials, saving resources and energy resources in the process!
