Overview
The
Environment Protection Policy (Noise) 2009, also known as the Noise EPP, sets a strategic framework for noise management in Tasmania by focussing on objectives and principles for noise control, with human health as a value to be protected. It does not include implementation measures, which are dealt with through other instruments such as regulations and planning schemes.

The EPP was made under section 96K of the
Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 and came into effect on 29 May 2009.
Environmental Values
The environmental values to be protected under the Noise EPP are the qualities of the acoustic environment that are conducive to:
- the wellbeing of the community or a part of the community, including its social and economic amenity; or
- the wellbeing of an individual, including the individual's –
- health; and
- opportunity to work and study and to have sleep, relaxation and conversation without unreasonable interference from noise.
Provisions
Provisions of the Noise EPP include:
- application, objectives, values and indicator levels;
- principles for implementation;
- transport infrastructure;
- commercial and industrial activities;
- domestic and miscellaneous activities; and
- measurement and monitoring.
Supporting Documents
Clause 15 of the Noise EPP requires that any measurement of noise carried out for the purposes of the EPP be made in accordance with the Noise Measurement Procedures Manual.
