The Proposal

Shree Minerals Ltd has proposed to develop an open pit magnetitie/hematite mine and processing plant near Nelson Bay River, approximatley 7 kilometres east of Temma in northwest Tasmania. The proposed mine will target 4 million tonnes of the resource over a 10 year period producing 150,000 tonnes of product per year.

The proponent has lodged a Development Application with a supporting Development Proposal and Environmental Management Plan (DPEMP) to Circular Head Council.

The application was referred to the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (the Board) for assessment under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA).

The Australian Government has declared the proposal a controlled action which will require assessment and approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. This process will occur separately from the State Government process.

Environmental Assessment Report and EPA decision

The environmental assessment report (EAR) has now been completed and can be viewed below. This report contains an environmental assessment and recommendations to the Board in relation to the proposal.

The permit conditions required by the Board to be included in the land use permit, if a permit is granted, by Circular Head Council are contained in Appendix 3 of the environmental assessment report.

The purpose of the DPEMP is to provide a source of information upon which interested individuals, groups, government agencies and the Board may consider the environmental and planning impacts of the proposal.

The DPEMP was prepared by the proponent on the basis of the project specific guidelines for preparation of an DPEMP which were provided by the Board.
