​The Proposal

Bluestone Mines Tasmania Joint Venture Pty Ltd (BMTJV) is proposing to construct and operate a new tailings retreatment plant, tailings storage facility, and associated infrastructure at the existing Renison Mine site, located off the Murchison Highway at Renison Bell. The proposal involves the reclaiming and processing of approximately 30 million tonnes of tailings material from existing tailing storage facilities at the site at a rate of approximately 2.5 million tonnes per year.

The new tailings storage facility, E Dam, has a proposed storage capacity of 37.9 million tonnes. The total disturbance footprint for the proposal is approximately 8.35 km2 and the total area of land to be cleared and or flooded for E Dam is 4.05 km2. 

The proponent intends to lodge a permit application with West Coast Council under the Land Use Planning and Approvals Act 1993. The proposal will be subject to an environmental impact assessment by the Board of the EPA (the Board) in accordance with the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPC Act).

​​Draft EIS Guidelines and Public Submissions

EIS Guidelines, prepared by the Board, assist the proponent in preparing the case for assessment. The guidelines identify the key issues which, based on the information in the Notice of Intent, are expected to be key issues for the assessment of the proposal.
