The Proposal

Carter Contracting is proposing to intensify operations at the Northdown Gravel Quarry, located off Port Sorell Road, approximately 2.5 kilometres west of Port Sorell. The proposal involves an increase in extraction from 5,000 cubic metres to 7,500 cubic metres of gravel per year and includes an increase in materials handling (screening) from 1,000 cubic metres to 7,500 cubic metres of gravel per year.

Source material containing pebbles and clay/sand is extracted in small volumes at a depth of 1.5m to 3.5m, washed to clean product and to remove silts, then placed into a mechanical vibrating screener to source into product size. The source material is transported of a weekday and is not expected to exceed 5 loads (10 truck movements) a week. No major works or structures are proposed.

The quarry is currently operating as a level 1 activity under mining lease 2069P/M and Latrobe Council planning permit DA 170/2025, for the extraction of 4,999m³ of gravel and materials handling of 1,000m³ of gravel.
