The Proposal​​

The proposal involves dewatering and recommencing mining in Centre Pit North and Centre Pit South at the Savage River Mine located off Mine Road, Savage River. The two pits are proposed to be merged into a single pit referred to as Centre Pit. The pit design involves cut back to the pit walls and extending the pit depth, with the excavation of approximately 31 million tonnes of ore and 255 million tonnes of waste.​ 

The proposal also includes the development of a new waste rock dump, designed to contain 11 million cubic metres of material.

The application was referred to the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (the Board) for assessment under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA).

Environmental Impact Statement

The purpose of the EIS is to provide a source of information upon which interested individuals, groups, government agencies and the Board may consider the environmental impacts of the proposal.

The EIS was prepared by the proponent on the basis of the Project Specific Guidelines for preparation of an EIS which were provided by the Board.

​​Public Exhibition of Documentation

A copy of the Environmental Impact Statement, including all plans and other documentation submitted with the application, was made available for public inspection. The public consultation period has now closed.​​

Environmental Assessment Report and EPA Decision

The environmental assessment report has now been completed and can be viewed below. The report contains the Environment Protection Notice conditions required by the Board.​
