​The EPA is Tasmania’s principal regulator of potentially polluting activities.​​

  • Food and Textiles Processing
    The EPA is responsible for regulating a broad range of activities including abattoirs and rendering plants, fish and shellfish processing, fish waste rendering, vegetable processing, milk, cheese, chocolate and beer production as well as textiles manufacturing.
  • Metallurgical and Chemical
    The EPA is responsible for actively regulating a diverse range of chemical and metallurgical industries such as smelters and fertilizer manufacturers.
  • Mining and Extractive
    The EPA is responsible for the regulation of over 200 quarrying and mining operations.
  • Wind Farms
    The EPA is responsible for regulating windfarms in Tasmania.
  • Wood Processing
    The EPA is responsible for regulating a broad range of activities including sawmilling, veneer mills, woodchipping operations, integrated wood processing centres, Timber preservation plants, and pulp and paper manufacturing.
  • Major Developments and Projects
    If a project can be shown to be in the interest of Tasmania or to require development approval from several councils, then a different assessment process applies.
  • Legislative Context of Industrial Operations
    The EPA’s responsibility for regulating the environmental impacts of industrial operations is clearly identified and defined by a range of statutory and non-statutory instruments.
