D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Huon River and Port Esperance

The EPA currently regulates finfish farming at 25 marine farming leases in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Huon River Estuary and Port Esperance region.

The location of these finfish farms and associated environmental licences can be accessed via the EPA Regulated Premises layer on LISTmap).

The Marine Farming Development Plan for the region is available on the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania website.

Management Determinations

The EPA issues Environmental Licences and makes determinations under management controls specified in Marine Farming Development Plans. This includes the setting of Total Permissible Dissolved Nitrogen Output (TPDNO) for marine finfish farming regions. TPDNO determinations also provide a share (apportionment) of the total TPDNO to each company that has active Environmental Licences for marine finfish farming in the region.

Current Determination

A new TPDNO determination for the D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Huon River and Port Esperance region was made on 29 November 2022, taking effect on 2 December 2022. This determination replaces the previous determination dated October 2019.

The 2022 determination varies the allocation of TPDNO portions to aquaculture companies in the region, while the regionwide amount of 2,340.55 tonnes per rolling 12-month period remains unchanged from the previous determination.

The new determination is valid for 10 years, after which it will be reviewed.

A table summarising the TPDNO and company allocations can be found here:

Antibiotics Residue Monitoring Report - Sheppards finfish farm 2022

Medicated feed containing antibiotics (active ingredient: Oxytetracycline) was applied at 15 pen bays over a 2-week period in January 2022 at the Sheppards finfish farm in the D'Entrecasteaux Channel. This measure became necessary due to an infection with Vibrio anguillarum. These events were supported by relevant Veterinary Authorisations (VAs) and were subject to comprehensive monitoring requirements stipulated by the EPA. Sampling of wild fish and sediment occurred on four occasions between 20 January and 17 March 2022.
