Wastewater is carried in discharges from homes, offices,
shops and factories to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The EPA’s
Wastewater Section imposes operating conditions on WWTPs that are designed to receive more than
100 kilolitres of wastewater per day – the 80 largest plants in
Tasmania – and monitors their environmental performance.
The Section also works with treatment plant operators to
improve performance and understanding of the environmental impact of sewage
treatment; oversees the recycling of wastewater by-products to make sure they
are managed sustainably; and works with TasWater and Councils to investigate
significant failures of the sewerage network.
