Monitoring Air Pollution

There are hundreds of pollutants in the air we breathe. In Tasmania, monitoring of air pollution focuses on particulate matter smaller than 10 micrometres diameter in the major urban centres. Particulate matter is an indicator of urban air pollution in Tasmania.

Monitoring of other air pollutants is carried out on a case-by-case basis, sometimes in response to complaints, sometimes as part of broader investigations linked to point sources and sometimes as spot checks on specific air pollutants. The EPA cooperates with research groups at Universities and the CSIRO.
