The new document Erosion and Sediment Control – the fundamentals for development in Tasmania (July 2023) provides all the basic information and practical guidance on erosion and sediment control. Improving work practices to always include the right controls means healthier waterways and a cleaner environment for everyone.
The information is divided into sections on: why we need to prevent this pollution; drainage; and erosion and sediment controls, which all do different things on a building site.
- Drainage controls direct clean runoff water away from a building site.
- Erosion controls hold the soil in place and reduce soil removal by rain runoff or wind.
- Sediment controls capture any accidentally eroded soil, preventing it from leaving the building site.
When installed correctly they are all designed to stop sediment pollution from building sites from getting into our waterways and stormwater systems.
This new information covers all aspects of erosion and sediment control through every building stage, with references to more detailed information for larger projects. There is also a 2-page brochure providing a summary of the Fundamentals and a typical building site illustrated with controls.
The Fundamentals document helps developers to benefit from correct use of controls including:
- Reduced risk of fines.
- Improved wet weather working conditions, reduced downtime, and earlier building completion.
- Fewer public complaints and a better public image for businesses.
- Reduced stockpile losses and clean-up costs.
Improving work practices to always include the right controls means healthier waterways and a cleaner environment for everyone.
