Connecting with Local Government

The active engagement of the EPA Division with local government over the last few months is reaping some positive rewards.

The autumn round of the 2015 EPA Division and Local Government training program is now complete. The program is a key plank of the Local Government Engagement Project, managed by Robyn Shaw who explained that local government environmental health officers, planners and technical officers had embraced the training opportunities enthusiastically.

"The feedback we received about the training at the June Environmental Health Association conference was positive, with some great discussion about how it might develop into the future," said Robyn.

"It is clear that Local council employees are eager to engage with the EPA Division, and the opportunities to increase that collaboration, potentially through shared working groups, are emerging," she said.

The training sessions delivered so far have included Environmental Impact Assessment and Notice Writing, and General Scene Management and Environmental Nuisance. A number of staff from the EPA Division have been involved in delivering the presentations and organizing the training sessions, including Kate Polglase, Malcolm Budd, Ellis Cox, Bill Wilson, Joscelyn Phillips, Alasdair Wells and Robyn Shaw.

Technical Officer Tracey Tavasz from the Glenorchy City Council who attended Environmental Nuisance Training said that the training session was timely and directly relevant to her work.

"This is so relevant to what I’m doing as a large part of my role is dealing with people who make complaints," said Tracey.

"Getting insight and information about domestic wood smoke is particularly valuable as we get quite a lot of wood smoke complaints," she said.

The EPA Division is now reviewing the program and will be scheduling activities and training for roll out later this year.
