New Lab to be built at New Town

The Government advertised last weekend for tenders to construct and make additions to premises for Analytical Services Tasmania laboratories at New Town.

Some of the laboratories for Analytical Services Tasmania are currently located at the University of Tasmania.

The new construction will enable the laboratories to be co-located with both Police and Emergency Service and Health and Human Services laboratories.

The work of Analytical Services is a critical part of the Environment Division and provides a broad range of analytical services and advice to government agencies, private companies and the community.

Some of the activities of the laboratories include chemical analysis of drinking surface, ground and waste waters; chemical analysis of food products and identification and enumeration of freshwater and marine algae.

The Analytical Services Tasmania laboratory is the only provider of some essential services for businesses in the State.

The estimated cost of the work is in excess of .5 million. Tenders close on 25 October 2006.
