Successful outcome for tug boat drama

A tug boat stranded on sand near Burnie has been successfully refloated and towed back to port.

The Fullerton Cove will be "boomed off" with oil spill containment booms as a precautionary measure while divers inspect the hull of the vessel.

Senior Environmental Officer Rosemary Holness said the recovery went smoothly and in the calm conditions took only minutes.

There was no sign of any oil in the water.

The operation was watched by a large crowd which was kept a safe distance from the action in case tow lines snapped.

"We were very happy with our preparations and this incident was a good follow up on last year’s oil spill exercise in Burnie," Rosemary said.

"I will brief the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and then stand down.

"It is a very good outcome."
