Burn Brighter This Winter: Small changes, cleaner air

Winter is here, and for many Tasmanians, a wood heater is an essential way to stay warm.

This year, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is asking everyone to Burn Brighter This Winter by making a few simple changes that can reduce wood smoke, improve air quality and help protect the health of our community.

Every winter, wood smoke is one of the biggest contributors to air pollution in many Tasmanian towns and suburbs. Smoke from poorly operated wood heaters can linger in the air during cold, still weather, affecting neighbours and increasing health risks for older people, young children and anyone living with respiratory conditions.

The good news is that cleaner burning doesn't require a new wood heater. Whether your heater is old or new, small changes to how you operate it can make a big difference.

Four simple steps to burn brighter

Burn only dry, seasoned wood

Dry wood burns hotter, produces more heat and creates significantly less smoke than damp or green timber.

Keep your fire burning with a flame

A bright, active flame burns fuel more efficiently. Avoid letting your fire smoulder, as this creates excessive smoke.

Burn hot for 20 minutes after reloading

Each time you add wood, especially before going to bed, fully open the air intake and let the fire burn bright for at least 20 minutes before turning it down. This helps the new wood ignite properly and reduces overnight smoke.

Keep your flue clean

A clean flue improves airflow, helps your heater perform efficiently and reduces the risk of smoke and chimney fires.

Small changes make a big difference

A well-maintained wood heater should produce very little visible smoke once it is burning properly. Burning your fire efficiently means you'll get more heat from every load of wood, reduce your heating costs and help improve air quality for everyone.

This winter, take a moment to look at your chimney. If you can see thick smoke for long periods, your heater may not be burning as efficiently as it could.

By making a few simple changes to the way you use your wood heater, you can help keep your family warm while protecting the health of your neighbours and creating cleaner air for all Tasmanians.

Burn brighter this winter. Better for your home. Better for your community. Better for Tasmania.
