The Environment Protection Authority is continuing its investigation into the process failure at TasWater's wastewater treatment plant at Cameron Bay.
The incident, confirmed as being non-compliant trade waste discharge (high concentration of sugar water) from the Mondelez factory at Claremont, resulted in discharge of incompletely treated effluent to the Derwent River.
Following a public health risk assessment, the Director Public Health has revoked the public health warning. Sampling results taken on Friday 20 December and Saturday 21 December 2024, indicate river water quality is suitable for recreational activities, with the exception of one sample site (western Bellerive Beach) being subject to further testing and investigation of potential local sources of contamination by Clarence City Council.
The EPA has issued Emergency Authorisations to support the safe and lawful disposal of Mondelez effluent until the wastewater treatment plant at Cameron Bay is able to receive it and has requested specific information from Mondelez on preventative measures it will take to avoid future process failures at Cameron Bay.
