The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) is pleased to publish its Annual Report for the 2023-24 Financial Year.
Acting Director and CEO, Cindy Ong, said the EPA has provided a transparent and informative update on its initiatives and achievements for 2023-24.
“As the regulatory agency charged with safeguarding the Tasmanian environment, the EPA is dedicated to making our policies more responsive to emerging challenges and holding polluters accountable for their actions,” said Ms Ong.
Throughout 2023-24, the EPA continued to audit environmental permit conditions across all sectors and to respond to complaints and incidents, with staff providing regulatory oversight for more than 500 premises.
More than 70 investigations were commenced by EPA officers from the Environmental Investigations Team, resulting in 50 Environmental Infringement Notices, and 7 court files for serious offences.
The EPA’s pollution reporting hotline, available 24/7, responded to over 500 calls.
Ms Ong acknowledged the efforts and commitment of the EPA staff and added that several milestones were reached in 2023-24.
“The Release of Environmental Monitoring Information (REMI) Project phases 1 and 2 were achieved and work on the public portal commenced, and the environmental impact assessment process saw 100 proposals, which is double the number in the approvals process 10 years ago,”
“We also saw the Environmental Standards for Tasmanian Marine Finfish Farming become law in 2023,” said Ms Ong.
Waste management compliance remained a key priority in 2023-24 and regulators continued to conduct compliance audits on waste depots throughout the year, actions undertaken in response to public complaints and reported incidents of environmental harm.
The 2023-24 Annual Report outlines further information on the achievements and activities of the EPA, and can be found on the EPA's
