The delegate of the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has concluded assessment of a proposal by Unity Mining Pty Limited for a Run-of-mine (ROM) pad extension at the Henty Gold Mine near Queenstown.
The environmental conditions in PCE 12087 apply to the activity area for the extended ROM Pad, which is one component of the wider Henty Gold Mine activity. The whole Henty Gold Mine activity, including the area for the ROM Pad extension is currently regulated under Permit no. 3562 (as varied by Environment Protection Notice 378/5) which applies to the land that includes mining leases 7M/1991, 5M/2002 and 7M/2006.
The proposal involves a 2.3 hectare extension to the existing ROM. Native vegetation will be cleared, and the ground levelled using cut and fill, creating a larger area for the temporary storage of mined ore and waste rock.
Public consultation was open for 28 days from 9 July to 7 August 2025. No representations were made in relation to the proposal.
The Board's delegate has considered the relevant issues and determined that the proposal can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, with conditions imposed. Key conditions include, ensuring PAF waste rock is not to be utilised in the construction of the ROM Pad, and that any waste rock material to be stored above ground is managed according to Best Practice Environmental Management. To protect waterways, no works or vegetation disturbance is permitted to occur within any Waterway and Coastal Protection areas.
The Board's delegate undertook assessment of the proposal in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Principles in Section 74 of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
