The delegate of the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has concluded its assessment of a proposal by Local Meat Co Pty Ltd for the expansion of an abattoir in Kentish Council.
The proposal involves an increase in production from the existing Claude Road Abattoir from up to 100 tonnes to 500 tonnes of meat or meat products per year. To facilitate the proposed increase, no changes are required to the majority of existing infrastructure, including the kill floor and boning rooms, vehicle access, receival yards or wastewater ponds. Two small, fully enclosed cool rooms will be added to the existing building to improve product flow and staff safety and will sit entirely within the existing developed footprint. The proposal also includes the irrigation of small volumes of wastewater on-site, which will be managed according to a Wastewater Irrigation Management Plan.
Public consultation was open for 14 days from 15 April 2026. No representations were made in relation to the proposal.
The Board's delegate has considered the relevant issues and determined that the proposal can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, with conditions imposed. Key conditions include:
Requiring any solid abattoir waste products to be contained in a sealed bin and removed within 24 hours.
Requiring the existing wastewater treatment system and storage ponds to be maintained to ensure ongoing effectiveness and sufficient capacity.
Requiring wastewater irrigation to be managed according to a Wastewater Irrigation Management Plan. This includes specifying appropriate locations, volumes and timing of irrigation events, which will be guided by regular testing of wastewater quality and soils.
The Board's delegate undertook assessment of the proposal in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Principles in Section 74 of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
