The delegate of the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has concluded the assessment of a proposal by Gowing Bros Ltd for Logie Farm Quarry for an increase in processing capacity with the addition of blasting, in Sorell Council and Clarence City Council municipalities.
The proposal involves a maximum of four blasting campaigns annually at the existing quarry for the continued extraction of dolerite to be used as road base, and to create benching for safety purposes. The proposal does not involve an increase in extraction from the currently permitted 15,000 m³ per annum, but does propose an increase from the currently permitted 5,000 m³ to 15,000 m³ per annum in materials handling (processing).
Public consultation was open for 28 days from 10 January 2026 to 9 February 2026. Two representations were made in relation to the proposal. One representation raised a number of concerns including dust emissions, impacts to natural values, water quality, noise and traffic issues the other representation raised no objections to the proposal.
The Board's delegate has considered the relevant issues and determined that the proposal can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, with a number of conditions imposed in relation to management of noise and blasting to avoid causing nuisance to sensitive receptors. Conditions are also imposed in relation to management of dust, water quality and natural values.
The Board's delegate undertook assessment of the proposal in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Principles in Section 74 of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
This decision and all assessment documents can be viewed on the EPA website at Proposals Assessed by the EPA | EPA Tasmania.
