EPA considers proposal for Stonehenge Quarry increase in extraction and materials handling

A delegate of the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has concluded assessment of a proposal by Southern Midlands Council for increase in extraction and materials handling at Stonehenge Quarry in the Southern Midlands.

The proposal put to the Board is a current level 1 quarry (1977 P/M) located approximately 25 kilometres southeast of Oatlands at Stonehenge. The quarry currently supplies materials to Southern Midlands Council and private projects throughout the municipality, with a current maximum annual extraction limit of 5,000 m³ and processing limit of 1,000 m³. The proponent sought to increase the annual regulatory limits for both extraction and processing to 20,000 m³ per annum of weathered dolerite rock.

Public consultation was open for 14 days from 15 January to 30 January 2026.

The Board's delegate has considered relevant environmental issues and determined that the proposal can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, with standard conditions imposed.  Key conditions include those related to dust and noise emissions, surface water and natural values.

The Board's delegate undertook assessment of the proposal in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Principles in Section 74 of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
