The Board of the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has concluded its assessment of a proposal by Pentarch Logistics Pty Ltd for a proposed wood optimisation hub at South Burnie in the Burnie City Council municipality.
The proposal involves the construction and operation of a new sawmill and pallet assembly and painting facility at the existing woodchip mill, producing up to 70,000 cubic meters of sawn timber products using logs diverted from the woodchip mill's existing log supply.
Public consultation was open for 31 days from 3 May 2025. One representation was made in relation to the proposal. There were no environmental issues raised relevant to the Board's assessment of the proposal.
The Board has considered the relevant issues related to the proposal and determined that the proposal can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner, with conditions imposed. Key conditions include the requirement for a Construction Environmental Management Plan to be developed to assist management of potential impacts during the construction phase. A Noise Reduction Plan is required for operations to ensure the site's noise limits are reduced over time to meet contemporary standards, and a suite of water management conditions have been included to ensure that stormwater from the activity is managed appropriately and that this can be demonstrated through an appropriate monitoring regime.
The Board undertook assessment of the proposal in accordance with the Environmental Impact Assessment Principles in Section 74 of the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994.
