EPA increases air quality monitoring in response to bushfires on Tasmania's West Coast.

With the West Coast complex of bushfires burning almost 100,000 hectares of land, significant smoke impacts have degraded air quality in the region, and some fires are still burning.

Staff from the EPA's Air Section are closely monitoring conditions on the West Coast and have installed a babyBLANkET (baby Base Line Air Network of EPA Tasmania) air monitoring station at Zeehan to provide an important source of information for residents and those planning to visit the area.

The BLANkET network measures real-time, indicative particle concentration data from smoke or dust, at 34 fixed stations around Tasmania and complements the major air quality stations in Hobart, Launceston, and Devonport.

Weather conditions, and events like bushfires, can affect air pollution levels, and our Air Section is liaising with the Director of Public Health and may deploy additional stations to other locations on the West Coast if necessary.
