Lake Rosebery Oil Spill Incident

On Monday 13 January 2025, Hydro Tasmania notified the EPA of an oily substance on Lake Rosebery centred around the Henry Bay Boat Ramp.  The EPA stood up an Incident Response Team and deployed marine pollution trained staff and oil spill response equipment to Tullah on the evening of 13 January 2025.

The most concentrated area was close to the boat ramp, however, preliminary surveys on water and land located oil, sheen and moussing from the bottom of the Macintosh Dam south to Sterling Inlet and west of Tullah for almost one kilometre.

A potential source for the oil spill has been identified as an historic part of infrastructure in the Henry Bay area, where oil has been stored for many years. EPA marine pollution staff have taken action to contain any further spills and investigations in relation to the potential source and the nature of the substance are ongoing.

The EPA is working with relevant authorities, including West Coast Council, Hydro Tasmania, and TasWater.

The community are asked to avoid all water activities on and around Lake Rosebery as the response team's efforts continue.
