George Town men charged with littering offences

24 November 2010

Two George Town men have each been fined $650 for dumping rubbish at Lefroy in Tasmania’s north east earlier this year.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) served a Litter Infringement Notice and an Abatement Notice on a man for removing household rubbish from his utility and leaving it in bushland at Volunteer Road, Lefroy.

In a separate incident, another man was fined for dumping controlled waste (tyres) in the same area.

Both men admitted to the offences after the Compliance Investigation Section of the EPA investigated complaints from members of the public.

Anyone witnessing littering in Tasmania can report it to the Look Who’s Littering online reporting system at www.environment.tas.gov.au/littering or phone the Litter Hotline on 1300 135 513.

Between January 2008 and 23 November 2010, 2231 litter reports were made to the Hotline, resulting in 1037 infringement notices and 111 written warnings and two abatement notices being issued.
