Application for Registration as a Controlled Waste Handler

​​​Under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Waste Management) Regulations 2020 (the Regulations), transportation of controlled waste within Tasmania must only be undertaken by a person who is a Registered Controlled Waste Transporter (unless otherwise exempted under the Regulations).

Due to changing needs arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, EPA Tasmania will not be prioritising routine applications for new controlled waste transporter registrations or variations to existing registrations involving additional controlled waste categories.

Special consideration may be given to progressing applications where business continuity depends on assessment of a new or varied Registration. If you consider that you fall into this category, please advise EPA Tasmania via the details provided below as soon as possible.

Please be aware that there may be delays in progressing applications, even in urgent cases.

Please note that process for varying a Registration to add or remove vehicles remains unchanged. The registered controlled waste transporter may transport an authorized controlled waste in a vehicle not specified on their registration provided that an application under and in accordance with Regulation 13(3) is submitted to the Director:

(a) prior to taking possession of the load of controlled waste;

(b) including the registration number, make, body type and carrying capacity in tonnes of the vehicle; and

(c) including a statement by the registered controlled waste transporter verifying that the vehicle complies with all relevant conditions of the person’s Registration.
