Information Bulletin 105 defines the criteria used by the EPA for the classification of contaminated soil that requires treatment and/or off-site disposal, and outlines the management of each classification in accordance with the Environmental Management and Pollution Control (Waste Management) Regulations 2010. Although criteria set out in this bulletin have been determined for soil, they maybe applicable to the classification of other solid waste material on an 'as needs basis'.
Information Bulletin 108 provides information and guidance on landfarming procedures and notification obligations for waste producers and environmental consultants. The information provided is intended to apply to a 'one-off' landfarm and not for permanent or commercial landfarms.
Sewerage and Biosolids
Sewage sludge and residues, nightsoil and septic tank sludge are classified as controlled wastes. Biosolids must be handled in accordance with the Approved Management Method for Biosolids Reuse. Wastes not defined as biosolids require appropriate approvals.
Household Hazardous Wastes
The Chemsafe Program for Household Hazardous Wastes provides a safe and easy collection and disposal service for obsolete or unwanted chemicals lying around the home. Controlled waste handled for usual domestic purposes is exempt from the Waste Management Regulations.
Unwanted Rural Chemicals
The ChemClear Program for Unwanted Rural Chemicals provides a safe and easy collection and disposal service for obsolete or unwanted agricultural and veterinary chemicals users. The drumMUSTER program provides for the collection and recycling of cleaned eligible non returnable crop production and on-farm animal health chemical containers. The EPA will not generally expect a person who is using one of these services to obtain an approval in accordance with the Waste Management Regulations.
