The Australian Packaging Covenant (APC) is an industry and government initiative to reduce the environmental impacts of packaging by encouraging improvements in packaging design, higher recycling rates and better stewardship of packaging. The APC contributes to the overall National Waste Strategy, seeking to minimise the generation of all sources of waste and maximise its recovery and recycling.
Implementation of the APC is coordinated through the industry-led Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), and is underpunned in all Australian jurisdictions through the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure 2011 (UPM NEPM) . In Tasmania, the UPM NEPM is deemed to be a State Policy under the State Policies and Projects Act 1993.
The Tasmanian Government supports the APC through the Government Officials Groups that provides a strong linkage between Australian state and territory governments and APCO.
