Litter Statistics and Reports

Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) hosts the annual National Litter Index (NLI), which is Australia’s only national, quantitative measure of litter types and volumes.  Litter is counted twice annually across 983 sites and this creates a report whereby each State and Territory can compare its previous figures, and that of other States and Territories.

For the NLI, litter counts and volumes are assessed at beaches, highways, shopping centres, car parks and other urban areas.

Using this research, KAB can identify how to develop better partnerships with government, community and industry, to deal with litter.

The Environment Protection Authority acknowledges the Tasmanian Aboriginal people as the traditional custodians of lutruwita (Tasmania) and pays respect to their Elders, past and present.
