The Proposal
The proposal involves the extension of the
existing WSF5 waste rock storage facility at Kara Mine. The waste rock dump is
designed to store approximately 7.2 million tonnes of waste rock from the
operation of Kara Mine, with around 1.3 million tonnes deposited per year. To
facilitate the extension of the waste rock dump approximately 14 hectares of
native vegetation will be required to be cleared.
The proponent has lodged a Permit Application with a supporting Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to Burnie City Council.
The application was referred to the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (the Board) for assessment under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA).
