The Proposal

The proposal is for a permanent change of operations at MMG's 2/5 Dam tailings storage facility in Rosebery. The tailings storage facility was previously approved by the EPA in 2016 with a requirement for tailings to be deposited sub aqueously (under water). The change in operations proposes tailings to be deposited subaerially. It is anticipated that the required minimum 2m water cover on closure will no longer be possible if permanent subaerial tailings deposition is undertaken.

The proponent has lodged a Permit Application with a supporting Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to West Coast Council.

The application was referred to the Board of the Environment Protection Authority (the Board) for assessment under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA).
